When to Aerate and Overseed in NC

Most lawns around Lake Norman are tall fescue, and tall fescue does not spread to repair itself. Every plant in the yard is one you or a machine put there. That is why the yearly aeration and overseeding visit matters more here than almost anywhere else in the country.

What aeration does

A core aerator pulls thousands of plugs out of the lawn. In our compacted clay, that is the one time a year the soil actually opens up: air and water reach the roots, and the holes give new seed direct contact with soil instead of sitting on a hard crust.

Why fall, specifically

The window is roughly September through mid-October. The soil is still warm enough to germinate seed fast, the brutal heat is over, and the new grass gets a full fall and spring to root before it faces its first Carolina summer. Spring seeding sounds logical and mostly is not: the seedlings hit summer heat at three months old, and most of them do not make it.

What a good visit looks like

  • Core aeration in two directions, not one quick pass
  • Seed matched to the lawn, spread at a real rate, not a courtesy sprinkle
  • Watering directions you can actually follow, in writing

What it is not

One visit will not fix a lawn that is being cut too short or watered at the wrong time. It is one piece of a plan. It is also the highest-leverage piece, which is why it is the one we tell people not to skip.

If your lawn thinned out over this summer, this is the window. Call before the calendar closes it and we will get the visit on the route.
